A few years back my family and I took a road trip to Ucluelet. It was an extraordinary experience that left me with a bigger appreciation for nature and its creatures. Next time you visit the area I recommend a trip to their touch and feel aquarium.
What I remember the most was this big and grumpy octopus. Why grumpy? Because it was the second year he would get caught- the aquarium has a catch and release policy- every October they have this release back in the ocean event. The educator at the aquarium mentioned a few facts about these interesting creatures.
They have a nervous system with a number of neurons similar to a dog. 60% of their neurons are in their tentacles. They’re considered intelligent creatures, having the ability to learn through observations, solve puzzles, and use tools. Their complex brains prompted scientists to develop flexible robots made out of soft material.
My hope for the grumpy octopus was that he wouldn’t be caught the following year.
