I tried chocolate milk for the first time just a while ago, and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. However, there has been lots of concerns about how it can negatively affect human’s health. I then decided to compare the pros and cons of chocolate flavoured milk and weigh out the two sides. Is it really worth it to consume this tasty drink, considering its possible harm to our body?
Benefits of Chocolate Milk
Chocolate milk has many benefits as well as nutritional values.
Nutritious – Chocolate milk is rich in calcium, protein, potassium and vitamin D, which are all essential minerals that our body needs to be healthy. Although it is not as healthy as the natural milk, chocolate milk possess all the nutrients that’s in the plain cow milk.
Great Taste – Milk contains calcium, which is a crucial mineral that young children needs to grow up tall and strong. Unfortunately, not every child is a big fan of milk. Chocolate milk, however, has an amazing taste that definitely attracts their tastebuds better than regular milk does.
Recovering Drink – Ever wonder why athletes love to have a Gatorade or a banana with them during games or practices? Banana contains lots of potassium which help reduce muscle pain while Gatorade provides electrolytes to keep stave off dehydration. Chocolate milk actually contains tons of potassium and electrolytes, potentially even more than the two other listed items. Many athletes drink low-fat chocolate milk for it helps to restore their muscle potential after a strenuous workout.
Worries and Concerns
There’s many concerns surround the consumption of chocolate milk, especially in young children.
High in Sugar – Perhaps the biggest concern about consuming chocolate milk is the amount of sugar it contains. The abundance in sugar can cause children to be obese and overweight, raising the risk of diabetes, and not to mention the cavities.
Overconsumption – There are many suspicions that chocolate milk can give you cancer. However, this hasn’t been 100% confirmed or scientifically proven. In fact, the real reason that people who drink chocolate milk and seem to diagnose cancer is because of their overconsumption of the drink. Although it contains lots of nutrients, chocolate milk is still a sugary drink that can cause diseases like diabetes, heart problems, obesity and even cancer if being consumed in large amounts.
Final Thoughts
Despite being high-level in sugar, chocolate milk can have many beneficial effects to our health if consumed in considerate amounts. Especially since it is beneficial towards athletes for its recovering abilities, it personally gives me more reason, being a basketball player, to be consuming it. When I first decided to do this blog post, I knew that there is a chance that I might be taking a break from chocolate milk. But since it seemed that chocolate milk is in fact, good for our consumption, that reminds me that I need to go grab myself a carton.
