Recently, I was able to have my first experience with the MRI and MEG, which was pretty exciting. No, I do not necessarily mean that I got an MRI and MEG scan. I got a brief tour and despite the limited time I spent at the tour, I learned so many things. So, what exactly is the MRI and MEG?
What are they?
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, while MEG stands for Magnetoencephalography. They are technologies that have the function of mapping the human brain, but have completely different methods in doing so. One similarity in their methods would be that they’re both non-invasive which is why these technologies are much less harmful. These machines are used for a variety of reasons from numerous researches to imaging injuries. Consequently, they’re a sensation in the world of technology.
To specify, this is only a short summary that explains a small fraction of these technologies and they’re potential. Obviously, these machines are much more complex and intriguing than my summary. So don’t be disappointed too soon!
Anyway, what was my experience like?
My Experience
It was pretty amazing. I never had a tour of a hospital or any medical facility in my life before this tour so I was very much excited and what I saw exceeded my expectations. I never really knew the details of the MRI and I had never even heard of the MEG. The reason for that would be that the MEG is still emerging in to the market of technology. However, that fact made it that much more interesting. The MEG I saw actually happened to be the only one in western Canada. How amazing is that?
I learned about how the machines functioned and its chemical components. On an additional note, I also got to see an MRI scan of a pineapple. Who would have thought that I’d ever see such a scan? It wasn’t totally for fun though, because it was all for an educative purpose, which was still pretty intriguing.
Overall, this experience made me open up more to technology and its wonders. Technology is often taken for granted by lots of people and I’m not an exception. I feel that this opportunity helped me see another perspective. Would such an experience do the same for you?
