Last summer, I was fortunate to go to Hawaii. One of the most memorable highlights was the trip to the Sea Life Park. It was there that I met Keikaimalu (“from the sheltered ocean”). She is the world’s first known surviving wolphin, born to a male false killer whale and a female bottlenose dolphin. I was lucky to swim with her and her calf – Kawili Kai (“blend of the ocean”).
This was an experience of a lifetime. The most breathtaking moment was during the foot push, when u feel all the strength and energy of all these wonderful animals as they push you across the water from the bottom of your feet.
I asked the trainer if they are happy at the Park. She told me this is the environment they are familiar with. She has to change their routine all the time because they are intelligent creatures and otherwise they would get bored. If they don’t want to do something you can’t make them do it.
After the program ended, I kept watching Keikaimalu and she was with a basketball and having a great time with it. The whole experience kept me reading articles about wolphins.
