As a kid, I was always proud of having a 20-20 vision. However, my vision began to worsen in grade six and I started to wear glasses. My optometrist suggested me to wear them temporarily, but, I eventually grew to wear them permanently. Now, I am fine with idea of wearing glasses, yet, at times, I cannot help but feel annoyed when the lenses fog up while I drink hot soup or when I accidentally smudge them. This led me to the thought of wearing contact lenses; I would not have to worry about them sliding off my nose or raindrops tricking onto them. But, are they actually better?
Contact lenses are corrective lenses that essentially come in two forms. There are soft contact lenses which are normally made of silicone-hydrogels to allow more oxygen to reach the cornea. The other type of lenses is rigid gas permeable contact lenses. They tend to be stronger and less comfortable to wear, but they do provide a clearer vision for the eye. No matter which you choose though, they both cover the eye’s cornea and can deprive them of oxygen which may cause dry eyes, eye infections or even vision loss.
However, with proper care of contact lenses, they are still safe to wear. A few pieces of advice when wearing contact lenses are to apply them correctly, to abide by your eye doctor’s advice and to specific wearing times, and to clean them frequently.
Contact lenses carry both benefits and inconveniences. For me, I will wear contact lenses occasionally, but continue to wear glasses as they are more convenient to remove and clean. Contact lenses are not necessarily better or worse than glasses. It mainly depends on the wearer; it is important to choose what is suitable for your eyes and to accommodate your lifestyle.
