You’ve had a stressful day. You’re lying in bed and you start playing music from Spotify. Suddenly, you feeling better. You love this song. The song that makes you dance. But why? Why is this music so enjoyable to the ear?
Some say, music is similar to a drug. Some people, like me, use music to relax after a stressful day. While listening to a favourite song, a neurotransmitter, dopamine is released. This triggers a happy feeling, making your day happier and enjoyable. When you listen to music with others, Oxytocin is also released from our brains. This hormone helps bond better with others and helps you gain trust. Sometimes, it feels like someone is talking to us through the music. We tend to like certain songs that contain a message. A specific message relating to a situation we might be involved in reality. Perhaps, you might feel like a specific song is written just for you. Obviously, Michael Jackson did not write “Smooth Criminal” for you. But, sometimes it may feel that way. This may be the reason why you like your favourite song.
There was a study that music can reduce pain for patients with Fibromyalgia. The music has proven to reduce the patients’ pain and drastically help them relax. Also, music can help visualize a fun memory from the past. After being reminded of a fun memory, you ultimately feel happier. So go on, listen to music and improve your happiness.
