When I was little, I used to think the Earth was flat. I truly believed that if you kept walking in a straight line, you would eventually fall of the edge of the world. This may seem ridiculous now, because we can see pictures of the Earth. But think about it, how do you know that the Earth is round? Have you ever seen the Earth in realty? Can you show definite proof for a spherical Earth?
I was shocked when I first heard that the Earth was round. I thought it was obvious to anyone, especially adults, that the ground was not curved.
This is the same claim that some people today use to prove that the surface of the Earth is flat. However, this belief was changed one day when I went to Vancouver Island. We took the sea bus from Vancouver and as we drifting out into the middle of the water, I saw the curve of the horizon. It seemed as if we were all in a bubble, floating on top of water.
Scientists have proved many times that the Earth is round. From the Ancient Greeks to NASA, proof seems to be everywhere. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, even had 3 different ways of showing that the Earth was a globe. One of these was the fact that ships would disappear hull-first over the horizon. That is to say, the bottom of the ship would dip under the horizon before the top. Therefore, it showed the natural dip of the Earth. All Furthermore, these theories and logical claims have been supported by physical evidence. Thousands of pictures from space by different sources and the fact that airplanes are able to fly around the world.
