What Does Hair Conditioner Do

It can take many years for people to find hair products that make their hair look and feel exactly the way they want it to. There are usually two main hair products that everyone uses, shampoo and conditioner. Most shampoos and conditioners are sold in pairs, and although there is so much variety, they all generally advertise soft, shiny hair! The conditioner part of the process is believed to determine the look of hair when dried. The shampoo breaks down and removes all the dirt that has gathered on your scalp, and the conditioner moisturizes.

The Conditioning Process

Simply put, the conditioner is adding oils and other layers to your hair. This can sound like you’re just reversing the effects of the shampoo, which is why it is important to understand what the shampoo does to your scalp. Since the shampoo strips your hair of natural oils, the hair can turn out rough or crinkly when dry. Without conditioner, hair doesn’t have the moisture it needs to move around without tangling. Conditioner uses glycerol or silicone polymers  to soften the hair from the base and make it shiny.

Is Conditioner Important?

Hair that appears rough and lacks natural oils because of the soap molecules needs conditioner. The conditioner can coat the hair and therefore soften it. Since the conditioner molecules are cationic they are easily attracted to the hair. That extra layer of moisture on your hair can also act as a shield from all the pollutants in the air. So if you shampoo your hair, conditioning it can be just as important!
